Stunning Diego, a sensitive, but gentle character was born on 11 July 2016. He spent much of his young life in private hands, kept alone in a small enclosure, waiting to be sold for canned hunting. He was rescued initially by an animal welfare activist in the Czech Republic and temporarily transferred to a private tiger sanctuary in Slovakia, whilst efforts were made to find him a more permanent and species-appropriate home. On November 5, 2024, accompanied by the FOUR PAWS team and under the watchful eye of a veterinarian, Diego's journey to a better life began as he was transferred to FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in The Netherlands - an incredible intensive care centre for traumatised big cats.
