Mero was born 1st October 2024. His life began in a place where no lion should ever be - a private residence in the Czech Republic, where he was kept illegally as a pet. His first days were marked by confinement, isolation, and a lack of proper care. As a young animal, Mero needed space to move, stimulation to develop, and the presence of his mother and siblings to feel safe. Instead, he was treated as a spectacle, stripped of everything that makes a lion a lion.
When Mero was 6 months old, the Czech authorities discovered Mero's situation and they acted quickly. He was temporarily housed in a zoo in the Czech Republic, where he was safe and received proper care. However, this was not a permanent solution, as young lions require intensive, specialised care to prevent serious physical and mental health problems. Shortly after his rescue, with the support of FOUR PAWS Mero was transferred to FELIDA in the Netherlands. His arrival in August 2025 marked the beginning of a new life - a life in which he can finally grow into a confident lion.
At FELIDA, Mero was received with open arms and expert care. As a young cub, he requires constant monitoring, not only for his physical health but also for his emotional well-being. The trauma of being separated from his mother at a young age and growing up in captivity has left its mark. Mero was withdrawn, anxious, and insecure about his surroundings, but he slowly began to show signs of trust. He responded to the soft voices of his caregivers, explored his enclosure with increasing confidence, and played with enrichment materials that stimulate his senses and encourage natural behavior. Mero's development is carefully monitored by the FELIDA team. Every stage of his growth is supported with species-specific care, from nutrition to special enrichment programs and behavioural observation. His caretakers describe him as a sensitive animal who experienced too much fear at a young age. Mero is starting to become more playful and curious, but is still deeply affected by sudden changes in his environment.
The proceeds from Mero's portraits are shared with FELIDA Big Cat Sancuary. For more information on this amazing sanctuary, please visit www.felida-bigcatsanctuary.org/nl
